Monitoring, Management, and Control System for Equipment at the Spent Fuel Storage Facility of Kozloduy NPP

In line with rising requirements for safety, sustainability, and technological advancement, a modern Monitoring, Management and Control System for Equipment was successfully implemented at the Spent Fuel Storage Facility (SFSF) of Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Bulgaria. The project was carried out by the Bulgarian engineering firm Rotek Ltd., in partnership with the global leader in industrial automation — Rockwell Automation.
The primary goal of the system is to ensure:
  • Reliable monitoring of equipment condition in the SFSF,
  • Automated control of critical processes, and
  • Centralized supervision with real-time remote access and fast response to anomalies.

The project is based on cutting-edge equipment from Rockwell Automation, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), communication modules, and SCADA software platforms. Key advantages of Rockwell Automation’s technology include:

Exceptional reliability – essential in nuclear environments where downtime is unacceptable.
Modular and scalable architecture – allowing for future expansion or system upgrades.
Seamless integration – with existing facility infrastructure and other systems.
Cybersecurity compliance – in line with the highest international standards for industrial security.

Rotek Ltd. is a well-established Bulgarian company specializing in industrial automation and energy systems. For this project, their team was responsible for:

  • Full system engineering and design,
  • Equipment configuration and programming,
  • Integration of automation and SCADA software,
  • Commissioning and on-site personnel training.

Thanks to their technical expertise and meticulous execution, Rotek Ltd. ensured a seamless deployment tailored to the specific requirements of the nuclear energy sector.
The system installed at the Spent Fuel Storage Facility of Kozloduy NPP is a prime example of successful collaboration between a top-tier local engineering firm and a world-renowned automation brand. This partnership not only enhances the safety and efficiency of the facility but also demonstrates how innovation, expertise, and trust can drive modernization in strategic infrastructure projects.
